Position within Europe

Every year the ILGA produce their authoritative analysis of LGBTQ+ rights in Europe. Until 2015 the UK was officially the best place in the whole of Europe for LGBTQIA+ people to live in terms of legal rights.1

For overall LGBTQIA+ rights, we have moved from topping the list of 49 countries down to 22nd place – a fall largely influence by the removal of rights of transgender people. Shamefully, the UK is now the only country in Western Europe with ‘amber’ status.2

Since the Supreme Court decision, the UK has been reclassified as having no full legal gender reassignment recognition. This means we now share the position of worst country in Europe for transgender people to live in this regard with Russia and Hungary.3
